The Dutch oven owes its name to the fact that it can easily be used as an oven by heating the pan from above and below. This can be with wood, charcoal or briquettes. The pan is made entirely of cast iron, so the Dutch ovens can be used on any heat source. Cast iron has the property that it conducts heat well and also retains it for a long time.
